One in five fish globally is caught illegally, causing certain fish stocks to plummet by up to 90 percent. How can we use data to enhance transparency of human activity at sea?
Athena Infonomics conducted a case study on Global Fishing Watch, an organization that aims to transform the management of our oceans through an open-access, online tool that visualizes and analyzes vessel-based human activity at sea in an effort to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. This case study was developed as part of Effective Data Sharing: Beyond Platforms, a report commissioned by the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data that investigates the landscape of data-sharing partnerships and identifies the key drivers of success.
