Bhitush Luthra, Athena Infonomics' Principal WASH Consultant, recently conducted a first-of-its-kind, nationwide assessment of sanitation in India's urban centers, made possible through the use of a comprehensive shit flow diagram (SFD).

This assessment found that only 27% of urban India's excreta is being managed "despite a successful Phase 1 of the Swachh Bharat Mission" and suggests that the country still has a long way to go if it seeks to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6.2 (access to "adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all" by 2030).

Water Science Policy published a blog post on the assessment—written by Bhitush and Deepa Karthykeyan—in several languages, and key findings were shared on the International Water Association's IWA Connect platform, as well as the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA)'s online forum.
