Baseline Asessment of Menstrual Hygiene Management Program
Tata Trusts

Project Overview

The Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management Programme (MHHMP) initiated by Tata Education and Development Trusts (TEDT) is designed to tackle the socio-cultural and infrastructural barriers that hinder safe and effective menstrual health management across Assam, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The program includes a range of activities such as awareness campaigns to challenge gender inequitable norms, enhancing access to hygienic resources, menstrual waste management, and building capacity through policy advocacy. To effectively guide these interventions, a detailed baseline study was conducted, essential for identifying key indicators and setting benchmarks to address unique challenges in menstrual hygiene management.

Impact

The Baseline Assessment conducted by Athena Infonomics provides a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to menstrual health among adolescent girls and adult women in the selected regions. By establishing critical benchmarks for key indicators, the assessment supports Tata Trusts in developing interventions tailored to the specific needs of each state. Insights from the assessment will directly contribute to enhancing awareness, improving access to hygienic resources, and ensuring effective menstrual waste management, ultimately strengthening menstrual health outcomes across these communities.

Athena’s Role

Commissioned by TEDT, Athena Infonomics India Private Limited conducted the Baseline Assessment as a foundational analysis for the MHHMP. The study, carried out between May and June 2024, spanned seven districts in Assam, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Athena utilized a mixed-methods approach, integrating both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods to capture a broad spectrum of insights. This approach allowed Athena to comprehensively review existing conditions and identify strategic areas for intervention, ensuring the program is evidence-based and adaptable to each state’s unique needs. Athena’s assessment provides TEDT with essential insights to guide impactful, data-driven decisions for sustainable improvements in menstrual hygiene management.
