Tata Steel Foundation (TSF) has designed a nutrition program to combat malnutrition among children under the age of five and anaemia among women in the reproductive age group (15-49 years) across 13 blocks in Jharkhand and Odisha. The program aims to provide comprehensive care for children up to five years old and to empower adolescent girls and women, as well as pregnant and lactating women, by educating them on nutrition, balanced diets, anaemia prevention, and related health issues.
To ensure effective program implementation, Athena Infonomics was commissioned to conduct a baseline evaluation of the program. This study systematically evaluated A-K-A-B-P (Awareness-Knowledge-Attitude-Behaviour-Practice) of over 8,000 adolescent girls and women in the targeted age group and geography on key project components. It also included a dietary assessment of these respondents along with anthropometric measurements to determine their nutritional status.
The study also assessed present status of malnutrition (Severely Acute Malnutrition (SAM), Moderately Acute Malnutrition (MAM), wasted) in children up to the age of 5 years, prevalence of anaemia among adolescent girls and women and present institutional capacities. These findings informed the program's development and evaluation, contributing to improved health outcomes in the region.
