Athena Infonomics Advisor Dr. Anantha Nageswaran is a macroeconomist and financial markets guru. He discusses the importance of scaling up cottage industries in India, while preserving culture.
In this paper, he reviews the India's industrial landscape, which has too many small players contributing too little in terms of output and value addition, examining why India's manufacturing growth has not been as exponential as other countries: factories that had 100 or more workers were only 16.4% of all factories in operation, for example. He urges that there is an urgent need to incentivize small manufacturing players to overcome chronic issues - such as through investments in innovation, skills, design and marketing capabilities.
